  • Our read: Edison International holds a C grade, reflecting average quality among utility peers, as strong valuation balances a damaged price trend.
  • The day: Shares rallied +8.9% to close at $58.79 on Tuesday after California lawmakers adjourned without voting on a disputed wildfire liability bill.
  • Watching: Whether the stock stabilizes after a -21.4% decline over the past week and how state policymakers address utility liability risks going forward.

Shares of Edison International surged +8.9% on Tuesday to close at $58.79, marking its second-largest daily gain over the past year. Trading activity was brisk, with volume reaching 5.2x the 20-session average. The rally followed a steep selloff on Monday, August 31, when state lawmakers rejected a sweeping plan that would have shielded electric utilities from insurer lawsuits over wildfire damages. The rebound took hold after the state Assembly adjourned without acting on a narrower compromise bill that utilities had opposed as inadequate, lifting shares as immediate legislative pressure eased.

Despite Tuesday's sharp bounce, the stock remains down -21.4% over the past week and -17.7% over the past month. EasyAlpha's latest analysis moved the company to a C grade from A among its S&P 500 industry peers. Companies graded A or B have stronger fundamentals and historically carry a lower risk of large drawdowns than companies graded D or E, while a C grade denotes a typical company with average overall quality.

The strongest support in the company's profile is its valuation. The shares trade at 5.6 times trailing earnings, supported by a 4.9% dividend yield. Wall Street analysts maintain an average price target of $76.25, though only 29.4% rate the stock a buy following recent price target cuts and analyst downgrades.

The primary pressure on the shares comes from their longer price trajectory. The stock remains 28.0% below its 52-week high, while sitting down -2.0% so far this year. Alongside a -4.1% year-over-year quarterly revenue contraction, unresolved liability exposure in California continues to keep the shares volatile.

How grades work

Every day we grade each company against the other companies in its sector, looking at its finances, how its stock trades, and what the market is signaling. The result is one simple letter.

  • AExcellent quality
  • BGood quality
  • CAverage quality
  • DBelow average
  • EWeakest quality
How grades work →

A grade measures quality against the other companies in a sector, from historical data. It is not a prediction, not a price target, and not advice. A company can be graded A and still fall.
