On Monday, October 26, the Energy sector advanced on broad participation even as its quality profile remained heavily weighted toward lower tiers. Only 18.0% of the Energy Select Sector SPDR Fund, an exchange-traded fund that trades under XLE, sits in companies graded A or B. Breadth was sturdy across the group, with 75.0% of its S&P 500 members finishing in positive territory. Refiners did the heavy lifting: Marathon Petroleum Corp posted +2.9% and Phillips 66 logged +2.0%. Overall, the sector finished +0.5%, while the fund closed +0.4%. That performance came as diplomatic mediation in Tehran helped ease fears of immediate escalation, even while elevated geopolitical risks kept crude benchmarks near recent highs.

Refiners were the session's standout gainers. Phillips 66 gained operational flexibility after an emergency exchange of up to 400,000 barrels from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve was authorized to address a crude supply interruption at its Lake Charles refinery. Upstream consolidation also reshaped the landscape on Monday, as natural gas producers agreed to an all-stock merger creating a combined entity valued above $50 billion between EQT and Range Resources. On the downside, Texas Pacific Land Corporation closed at -1.5%.

The sector's advance developed inside a receptive wider tape, as 9 of the 11 sectors rose. The day extended a substantial multi-month run for the space, driven by firm commodity pricing that has spurred heavy capital inflows across major energy funds. That momentum places XLE at +12.2% over the past month, +18.5% over the last 100 sessions, and +20.7% across the past six months.

Yet that recent strength sits against a challenging longer-term baseline and a thin foundation of quality. Over the past twelve months, XLE stands at -20.9%. EasyAlpha grades each company against its industry peers. Companies graded A or B have stronger fundamentals, and historically they have carried a lower risk of large drawdowns than companies graded D or E. Across the fund, only 18.0% of graded holdings meet that standard.

How grades work

Every day we grade each company against the other companies in its sector, looking at its finances, how its stock trades, and what the market is signaling. The result is one simple letter.

  • AExcellent quality
  • BGood quality
  • CAverage quality
  • DBelow average
  • EWeakest quality
How grades work →

A grade measures quality against the other companies in a sector, from historical data. It is not a prediction, not a price target, and not advice. A company can be graded A and still fall.
