Breadth across the Energy sector was broad on Monday, October 5, with 85.7% of its S&P 500 members finishing higher. The Energy Select Sector SPDR Fund, an exchange-traded fund tracking the sector under the ticker XLE, closed +1.0% at $63.44, while the cap-weighted sector finished +0.9%. The equal-weighted measure was +1.4%, indicating that smaller and mid-sized names outpaced the largest integrated producers. Refiners and equipment providers led the session, with Valero Energy Corporation closing +3.2% and Schlumberger NV closing +3.2%, while Diamondback Energy Inc was the lone notable decliner at -0.3%. Across the portfolio, 38.5% of the fund's graded weight sits in companies with an A or B quality grade.
The sector advanced even as underlying commodity benchmarks retreated. Brent crude settled down 1.9% at $100.32 a barrel after swinging between $100 and $103. That pullback followed rising Middle East crude exports and a planned G7 reserve release that helped relieve immediate supply concerns. Broader equity strength also provided a tailwind as major indexes approached record levels, contributing to a session where 10 of the 11 sectors rose.
Individual holdings saw supportive corporate developments across refining and liquefied natural gas operations. Shares of Marathon Petroleum reached an all-time high of $431.23. ConocoPhillips signed a long-term supply deal with Venture Global to purchase liquefied natural gas.
With $41.4 billion in net assets and an annual expense ratio of 0.08%, Energy Select Sector SPDR Fund offers concentrated exposure to these industry dynamics. Over longer horizons, performance reflects the cyclical volatility of the energy group. The fund is -1.8% over the past month, but it is +5.5% over the past six months and +10.1% over the past 100 sessions, while remaining -28.6% over the past twelve months.

How grades work
Every day we grade each company against the other companies in its sector, looking at its finances, how its stock trades, and what the market is signaling. The result is one simple letter.
- AExcellent quality
- BGood quality
- CAverage quality
- DBelow average
- EWeakest quality
A grade measures quality against the other companies in a sector, from historical data. It is not a prediction, not a price target, and not advice. A company can be graded A and still fall.
