A thin advance and concentrated quality defined the session for energy stocks on Monday, October 19. In the Energy Select Sector SPDR Fund, an exchange-traded fund that tracks the sector under the ticker XLE, just 20.1% of graded holdings sits in companies graded A or B, and internal breadth stalled as only 20.0% of sector members advanced. The fund closed at -0.6% at $67.81, matching the broader Energy sector's -0.6% finish. Downward pressure was led by Valero Energy Corporation, which ended at -2.6%, overpowering a modest gain in APA Corporation at +1.2%. Crude oil markets dictated the tone, as prices softened after the suspension of select Russian sanctions. That pressure countered supply concerns stirred by renewed Houthi attacks on Saudi infrastructure.

Company-specific headwinds added to the pressure. Valero Energy Corporation fell after being downgraded to Hold. While selective buyers emerged, including Occidental Petroleum Corporation ending at +0.5%, the broader complex could not shake off the selling. Losses widened gradually across the afternoon as energy shares slipped into the close.

Internal breadth told the story of an uneven market. With four out of five sector constituents losing ground, the equal-weighted sector return of -0.7% lagged the cap-weighted outcome. The fact that the cap-weighted sector held up slightly better indicates that the biggest companies did more of the work than smaller peers. The group's quiet retreat unfolded alongside broader equity caution, as 3 of the 11 sectors rose during the session.

The day's modest pullback pauses an otherwise brisk rebound over recent months. The fund's return over the past month sits at +5.4%, and its move over the past six months stands at +21.4%. Over the past twelve months, however, the fund sits at -21.1%, underscoring the deep drawdown from which energy stocks have spent recent months clawing back.

How grades work

Every day we grade each company against the other companies in its sector, looking at its finances, how its stock trades, and what the market is signaling. The result is one simple letter.

  • AExcellent quality
  • BGood quality
  • CAverage quality
  • DBelow average
  • EWeakest quality
How grades work →

A grade measures quality against the other companies in a sector, from historical data. It is not a prediction, not a price target, and not advice. A company can be graded A and still fall.
