Breadth inside the Energy sector was narrow on Tuesday, September 22, with only 14.3% of its member companies closing higher. That widespread selling pulled the cap-weighted sector to -1.0%, while the exchange-traded fund Energy Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLE) closed at $61.76, moving -1.1%. Equal-weighted performance was even softer at -1.5%, indicating that selling was distributed broadly across the sector rather than confined to its largest holdings. The pullback followed an easing in energy markets, as crude prices retreated when signs of diplomatic dialogue and recovering Gulf export flows dampened immediate supply disruption concerns, leading Brent crude to briefly drop below $98 a barrel.
Individual performance across the sector reflected that broad selling pressure, even as analysts projected Marathon Petroleum breaking into new highs. Valero Energy Corporation was the sector's steepest decliner, finishing -4.1%. A few member stocks managed modest resilience against the decline, led by EQT Corporation at +1.4% and Schlumberger NV at +0.8%. Across the wider market, 5 of the 11 sectors rose, leaving energy among the session's primary laggards on the day.
From a quality perspective, 36.2% of the fund's graded weight sits in companies carrying A or B quality grades. Every day EasyAlpha grades each company against its industry peers. Historically, companies graded A or B demonstrate stronger fundamentals and have carried a lower risk of large drawdowns than companies graded D or E. That quality distribution frames how the sector absorbs market pressure over time. Today's decline extends a month-long pullback of -3.0% for XLE, even as the fund preserves a +3.5% gain over the multi-month chart window.

How grades work
Every day we grade each company against the other companies in its sector, looking at its finances, how its stock trades, and what the market is signaling. The result is one simple letter.
- AExcellent quality
- BGood quality
- CAverage quality
- DBelow average
- EWeakest quality
A grade measures quality against the other companies in a sector, from historical data. It is not a prediction, not a price target, and not advice. A company can be graded A and still fall.
