On Friday, September 11, the Energy Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLE), an exchange-traded fund that tracks the sector, closed +0.3% at $65.13 while 60.0% of its member companies advanced. Cap-weighted sector performance registered +0.3%, while the equal-weighted measure was 0.0%, indicating that larger holdings accounted for most of the upward drift. Across the fund, only 19.3% of the portfolio sits in companies graded A or B for peer quality. The quiet session occurred as depleted crude supply buffers raised concerns that oil prices could remain elevated.

Refiners and midstream pipeline operators provided the main upward momentum. Valero Energy Corporation (+1.3%) finished as the sector's top gainer, followed by ONEOK Inc (+0.9%). Our sources show no company-specific announcements behind either move, but energy shares found broader backing as crude remained on track to finish the week above $100 alongside shipping disruptions. On the other end of the group, Expand Energy Corporation (-2.1%) posted the steepest decline.

Upstream exploration and production firms also saw operational developments. Exploration activity yielded results as ExxonMobil discovered new hydrocarbons in offshore Angola at its Vicango East-01 exploration well. Meanwhile, broader equity markets advanced as crude prices eased from earlier session highs and inflation data met expectations, relieving pressure on the wider economy.

Across the broader market, 9 of the 11 sectors rose. While XLE closed +6.7% over the past month and stands at +12.9% over the past six months, those recent gains follow an extended pullback, leaving the fund at -26.9% over the past twelve months.

How grades work

Every day we grade each company against the other companies in its sector, looking at its finances, how its stock trades, and what the market is signaling. The result is one simple letter.

  • AExcellent quality
  • BGood quality
  • CAverage quality
  • DBelow average
  • EWeakest quality
How grades work →

A grade measures quality against the other companies in a sector, from historical data. It is not a prediction, not a price target, and not advice. A company can be graded A and still fall.
