The Energy sector gained +2.1% on Monday, August 31, standing out as 2 of the 11 sectors rose. Buying was widespread across the sector, with 90.5% of its members advancing. The exchange-traded fund Energy Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLE) rose +2.0% to close at $63.94. The sector's cap-weighted advance ran ahead of its +1.8% equal-weighted rise, showing that larger integrated producers provided extra lift. Gains were led by Schlumberger NV (+4.9%) and Texas Pacific Land Corporation (+2.8%), while EQT Corporation (-0.7%) was the primary laggard. The rally took off after renewed military strikes between the United States and Iran escalated fears of global crude supply disruptions and pushed oil prices up by more than 2.5%.
Higher crude prices helped lift shares of major energy producers and refiners even as broader equity markets retreated as the Middle East conflict intensified. Energy stocks have gained over recent weeks, extending XLE's advance over the past month to +7.4%. For investors tracking the move, Energy Select Sector SPDR Fund provides low-cost sector access at an expense ratio of 0.08% across $39.2 billion in net assets, though the fund concentrates heavily in the sector's prevailing quality profile.
Behind the headline gains, however, EasyAlpha's quality analysis shows a fragile foundation. Only 17.3% of the fund's graded holdings earn an A or B grade. EasyAlpha grades each company against its industry peers. Companies graded A or B have stronger fundamentals, and historically they have carried a lower risk of large drawdowns than companies graded D or E. Most energy companies currently land in average or below-average quality tiers.
While military action in the Middle East can spark rapid sector-wide advances, the small share of top-tier grades highlights the sector's peer-relative profile. Geopolitical spikes lift the group together, but historically, lower-graded companies have carried higher drawdown risk when market conditions turn.
