Reuters reported that crude oil reversed early declines and climbed after the White House confirmed it was not holding negotiations with Iran, dampening expectations that diplomatic talks would restore Middle East shipping flows. The New York Stock Exchange noted in its market update that geopolitical tensions pushed oil prices around throughout Thursday, August 27. Dow Jones Newswires reported that West Texas Intermediate crude finished higher by about 1.6%, providing support to energy equities after early weakness.

The commodity rebound was not enough to push the cap-weighted Energy sector into positive territory, finishing the day down -0.4%. The Energy Select Sector SPDR Fund, an exchange-traded fund that serves as the benchmark vehicle for the sector under the ticker XLE, slipped -0.2% to close at $62.29. The minor pullback on Thursday comes after a solid multi-week advance, leaving XLE up +6.2% over the past month.

Looking beneath the headline number reveals a clear divergence between the sector's largest components and the rest of the group. Weighting each constituent equally, the sector rose +0.2%, and breadth was balanced as 10 of 21 closed higher. Halliburton Company (+3.0%) was the top performer on the day, followed closely by APA Corporation (+2.9%). On the other side, Targa Resources Inc (-1.7%) ended as the sector's weakest name. Because the cap-weighted index gives far more influence to the largest companies, their declines outweighed the gains across the rest of the group and pulled the headline number into the red.

The concentration of $39.2 billion across just a few mega-cap holdings means that despite an expense ratio of 0.08%, Energy Select Sector SPDR Fund provides a vehicle whose daily direction is dictated by its heaviest holdings rather than broader sector participation.

How grades work

Every day we grade each company against the other companies in its sector, looking at its finances, how its stock trades, and what the market is signaling. The result is one simple letter.

  • AExcellent quality
  • BGood quality
  • CAverage quality
  • DBelow average
  • EWeakest quality
How grades work →

A grade measures quality against the other companies in a sector, from historical data. It is not a prediction, not a price target, and not advice. A company can be graded A and still fall.
