The Energy sector finished -0.8% on Monday, September 14 amid narrow internal breadth across the group, with only 33.3% of sector members advancing. Within the exchange-traded fund Energy Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLE), 18.7% of the graded weight sits in companies graded A or B. The fund closed -0.9%, held up slightly by large-cap producers as the cap-weighted sector outperformed the equal-weighted return of -1.0%. Modest gains in EOG Resources Inc (+0.8%) and APA Corporation (+0.7%) were offset by steep losses in Schlumberger NV (-4.9%).
The sector-wide pullback coincided with an intraday reversal in energy commodity markets. Crude oil retreated from an intraday peak near $110 per barrel to settle near $105.68 as earlier gains faded. Meanwhile, broader equity markets faced pressure as the 10-year Treasury yield briefly crossed 5%.
Company-specific news across the sector remained selective. Valero Energy drew attention as the refining stock rallied over the past year. In analyst actions, Occidental Petroleum received a raised price target on its capital plan.
EasyAlpha grades each company against its industry peers using historical data. In our research, companies graded A or B have stronger fundamentals and have historically carried a lower risk of large drawdowns than companies graded D or E. With only 18.7% of the fund's graded weight in those two highest tiers, most of the sector resides in lower-graded tiers across the stocks we grade.
On a session where 3 of the 11 sectors rose, XLE added to a constructive multi-month performance run, posting +5.7% over the past month and +11.5% over the past six months. Over a full annual horizon, however, the fund remains -27.2% over the past twelve months.

How grades work
Every day we grade each company against the other companies in its sector, looking at its finances, how its stock trades, and what the market is signaling. The result is one simple letter.
- AExcellent quality
- BGood quality
- CAverage quality
- DBelow average
- EWeakest quality
A grade measures quality against the other companies in a sector, from historical data. It is not a prediction, not a price target, and not advice. A company can be graded A and still fall.
