On Tuesday, September 29, the exchange-traded fund Energy Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLE) closed -0.9% as broad selling pressure moved through the Energy group. Market breadth was severely restricted, with only 4.8% of the sector's components finishing higher, while just 16.3% of the fund's graded weight sits in companies graded A or B. The retreat followed pressure in energy commodity markets, where crude oil prices dropped. Selling accelerated as concerns over Middle East export disruptions began to ease.
Crude prices fell as markets reacted to recovering regional exports and improving tanker traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, which cooled the geopolitical risk premium that had lifted contracts in recent sessions. Brent crude fell about 1.7%, eroding immediate pricing support across the sector. The softer commodity tape triggered widespread selling across producers and service providers, overshadowing operational achievements like ExxonMobil reaching one billion barrels of cumulative oil production in Guyana.
The cap-weighted Energy sector finished -0.9%, while the equal-weighted sector settled -1.2%. The weaker performance in the equal-weighted measure shows that mid-sized and smaller industry peers experienced steeper declines than the largest integrated firms. Across the wider market on Tuesday, September 29, 3 of the 11 sectors rose. Inside the fund, Schlumberger NV was the weakest performer with a move of -3.1%, despite recently winning integrated well construction contracts in Saudi Arabia. The company also recently secured subsea production awards for liquefied natural gas in Mozambique. Meanwhile, Marathon Petroleum Corp led the few gainers at +0.7%, while Devon Energy Corporation finished -0.3%.
For investors using Energy Select Sector SPDR Fund, which manages $41.4 billion with an expense ratio of 0.08%, the drop to $61.55 reflects a sector struggling for consistent direction. The fund remains +10.0% over the past 100 sessions and +0.5% over the past six months, but Tuesday's weakness pulled trailing performance to -1.8% over the past month and leaves the vehicle at -31.8% over the past twelve months.

How grades work
Every day we grade each company against the other companies in its sector, looking at its finances, how its stock trades, and what the market is signaling. The result is one simple letter.
- AExcellent quality
- BGood quality
- CAverage quality
- DBelow average
- EWeakest quality
A grade measures quality against the other companies in a sector, from historical data. It is not a prediction, not a price target, and not advice. A company can be graded A and still fall.
