Crude oil prices rose on Friday, August 21 as geopolitical friction fueled supply concerns. Reuters reported that threats of tighter United States sanctions on Iranian oil and transit disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz supported crude benchmarks. DTN reported that Ukrainian attacks on Russian refineries added further support to oil markets. Equity markets, however, did not follow the commodity higher. Kitco News reported that while the broader market rebounded behind healthcare and financial shares, elevated Treasury yields weighed on broader sentiment. MT Newswires reported on Yahoo Finance that energy equities traded mixed throughout the afternoon, lagging the gains in crude futures.

The Energy sector fell -0.2% on a cap-weighted basis, and its primary exchange-traded fund, Energy Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLE), declined -0.2% to close at $63.64. Market breadth across the sector was narrow, with only 7 of 21 posting positive returns for the session. The sector's equal-weighted move was -0.1%. Because the cap-weighted sector fell more than the equal-weighted version, the largest companies in the index accounted for a greater share of the downward drag than the smaller constituents.

Individual stock performance showed a clear divergence between the day's winners and losers. Gains were led by Texas Pacific Land Corporation (+3.8%) and Valero Energy Corporation (+2.2%). However, those gains could not counterbalance widespread declines across the rest of the group, where APA Corporation (-2.3%) dropped the furthest.

Friday's modest decline paused a broader multi-week advance for XLE, which has gained +7.2% over the past month. Even as daily commodity moves create short-term swings, the fund's recent trajectory reflects sustained momentum across the broader energy complex over the prior four weeks.

EasyAlpha grades 99.3% of the fund's holdings against their industry peers. Only 21.8% of that graded weight sits in companies graded A or B. In EasyAlpha's grading framework, companies graded A or B have stronger fundamentals, and historically they have carried a lower risk of large drawdowns than companies graded D or E.
