- Our read: EasyAlpha grades Equifax Inc C, indicating average quality among industry peers in the S&P 500, where supportive valuation balances a lagging price trend.
- The day: Shares surged 7.3% to $161.28 without a dedicated company release on the day.
- Watching: Third-quarter financial results scheduled for Tuesday, October 20.
Equifax had no fresh corporate releases on Thursday, October 15, yet its shares rallied sharply. Market trading centered instead on recent mortgage initiatives rolled out in recent weeks. Equifax announced that nearly 2,000 lending institutions had adopted its VantageScore 4.0 program, resulting in a 230% increase in mortgage score pulls. It also introduced Mortgage Ultimate, an automated verification tool aimed at delivering a 95% fulfillment rate.
Positioning ahead of the upcoming earnings release also contributed to the sharp buying. Equifax scheduled its third-quarter conference call for October 20, 2026, prompting investors to accumulate shares after weeks of product announcements. Meanwhile, broader equity markets gained ground on Thursday.
Thursday's surge extended a winning streak to six consecutive sessions, leaving the stock +10.8% over the past week. Yet EasyAlpha grades Equifax C, placing it in the middle tier of industry peers in the S&P 500. Across EasyAlpha's historical studies of peer groups, companies graded A or B have demonstrated stronger fundamentals and historically carried a lower risk of large drawdowns than companies graded D or E. Equifax sits squarely in the average tier, where promising commercial developments are tempered by longer-term vulnerabilities.
The central watch item in the company's file is price trend. Even after the recent multi-day rally, the stock stands at -25.7% so far this year and sits 31.7% below its 52-week peak. The strongest line in its profile is valuation, where the shares trade at a forward price-to-earnings ratio of 16.1 and a trailing multiple of 26.2. In its latest reported quarter, revenue growth was +10.6% year over year.
Wall Street maintains an optimistic stance on the business. Among 24 covering analysts, the average price target stands at $197.62, which sits 22.5% above the latest close. EasyAlpha's C grade reflects a company whose underlying quality still tracks the middle of its industry group rather than its top performers.

How grades work
Every day we grade each company against the other companies in its sector, looking at its finances, how its stock trades, and what the market is signaling. The result is one simple letter.
- AExcellent quality
- BGood quality
- CAverage quality
- DBelow average
- EWeakest quality
A grade measures quality against the other companies in a sector, from historical data. It is not a prediction, not a price target, and not advice. A company can be graded A and still fall.
