On Wednesday, September 2, 75.3% of the stocks in the Financials sector advanced, lifting the cap-weighted sector by +0.7% while the equal-weighted measure gained +0.8%. The move reflected broad participation on a session where 10 of the 11 sectors rose. Investors following the group through Financial Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLF), an exchange-traded fund managing $57.9 billion, saw the fund rise +0.8% to close at $57.65. The broader bid was supported as Treasury yields steadied with the 10-year yield easing to 4.78%, encouraging investors to rotate toward financial companies that can benefit from elevated interest rates and wider lending margins.

Payments and financial technology names drove much of the session's upside. Block, Inc (+5.9%) led all sector members after disclosure showed an investment firm purchased $37.4 million in shares. Fellow payments firm PayPal Holdings Inc (+4.3%) also climbed as buyers stepped in following a prior selloff and ahead of an upcoming ex-dividend date. Meanwhile, traditional banking shares gained as investors favored large lenders with steady income streams. The gains were not universal across the board, however, as exchange operator Cboe Global Markets Inc (-4.5%) dropped during the session.

Under the surface, EasyAlpha's quality grading shows solid fundamental health across the sector. Companies graded A or B make up 65.8% of the fund's graded weight. In EasyAlpha's historical research, companies graded A or B have stronger fundamentals and have carried a lower risk of large drawdowns than companies graded D or E. While Financial Select Sector SPDR Fund is down -0.4% over the past month, its low expense ratio of 0.08% helps investors keep holding costs minimal when accessing the broader sector.

How grades work →

A grade measures quality against the other companies in a sector, from historical data. It is not a prediction, not a price target, and not advice. A company can be graded A and still fall.
