Selling pressure stretched across the Financials sector on Tuesday, September 1, with only 26.7% of its S&P 500 members posting gains as the exchange-traded fund Financial Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLF) fell -0.9%. The equal-weighted group slipped -1.1%, lagging the cap-weighted sector drop of -1.0% and showing that smaller financial firms absorbed heavier losses than the largest institutions. A sharp slide in Interactive Brokers Group Inc (-7.1%) led the declines, while Cboe Global Markets Inc (+2.4%) and Aon PLC (+1.5%) provided isolated resilience. The pullback followed renewed inflation concerns and climbing Treasury yields, which weighed on equities across Wall Street as expectations for tighter monetary policy resurfaced.

The broader market struggled during the session, where 4 of the 11 sectors rose as surging crude oil prices unsettled investors. Within the financial group, single-stock developments magnified the losses for specific names. Interactive Brokers tumbled after a brokerage downgrade to Neutral cited valuation after a strong run, while an investment bank removed the stock from a top conviction list. In contrast, Cboe gained, though our sources show no reported driver behind the move.

Broad equity indices faced pressure throughout the session as rising bond yields and energy costs weighed on market sentiment. Financial stocks moved lower alongside the wider market as investors navigated tighter financial conditions.

For investors tracking the group through XLF, the fund closed at $57.21, leaving it down -0.3% over the past month. EasyAlpha grades 63.5% of the fund's graded weight in quality tiers A or B. Historically, companies graded A or B have stronger fundamentals and have carried a lower risk of large drawdowns than companies graded D or E.

A grade measures quality against the other companies in a sector, from historical data. It is not a prediction, not a price target, and not advice. A company can be graded A and still fall.
