EasyAlpha grades the stocks across the Financials sector against their industry peers, and 64.0% of the fund's graded weight sits in companies carrying an A or B quality grade. Companies in those top tiers have stronger fundamentals and historically carry a lower risk of large drawdowns than companies graded D or E. Yet that quality foundation offered little shelter on Friday, October 23, as breadth collapsed: only 9.3% of the sector's S&P 500 members advanced. Selling was remarkably uniform across company sizes, with the cap-weighted sector closing -1.4% and an equal-weighted measure matching it at -1.4%. The Financial Select Sector SPDR Fund, an exchange-traded fund that tracks the sector under the ticker XLF, finished -1.3%. A steep slide in Globe Life Inc, which ended -8.1%, weighed on the sector alongside commercial banks, while isolated resilience in Cboe Global Markets Inc at +3.8% did little to cushion the group. The retreat deepened as rising crude oil prices and benchmark Treasury yields approaching 5% pressured equities and renewed concerns over persistent inflation.

Macroeconomic pressures rippled across the broader market, leaving Financials among the session's laggards on a day when only 3 of the 11 sectors rose. Major retail and commercial banks felt that pinch, with JPMorgan Chase, Citigroup, and Capital One all falling as bond yields tightened financial conditions. Citigroup secured regulatory approval to establish a wholly owned securities venture in China.

Company-specific issues added to the broader pressure. Globe Life Inc experienced the sharpest pullback in the group after analysts downgraded the stock on concerns over medical claims volatility. That downgrade followed third-quarter financial results where the insurer lowered its full-year earnings forecast because of elevated claims severity, accelerating the stock's drop.

In contrast, exchange operators provided rare insulation from the broader decline. Cboe Global Markets Inc was the sector's top performer, ending +3.8%. Our sources show no reported driver for the move.

The session left XLF closing at $55.90. Despite Friday's retreat, the fund sits at +2.5% over the past month.

How grades work

Every day we grade each company against the other companies in its sector, looking at its finances, how its stock trades, and what the market is signaling. The result is one simple letter.

  • AExcellent quality
  • BGood quality
  • CAverage quality
  • DBelow average
  • EWeakest quality
How grades work →

A grade measures quality against the other companies in a sector, from historical data. It is not a prediction, not a price target, and not advice. A company can be graded A and still fall.
