The exchange-traded fund Financial Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLF) saw broad participation on Tuesday, with 96.1% of the sector's S&P 500 members finishing higher and 64.0% of the fund's graded weight concentrated in companies graded A or B. The cap-weighted Financials sector closed +1.2%, while an equal-weighted view of the group finished +1.5%, showing that mid-sized and regional institutions did more work than mega-cap banks. Top performers MSCI Inc and KeyCorp paced the group. Across the wider market, U.S. stocks rose as oil prices and Treasury yields eased.
Earnings Drivers
Regional lender KeyCorp closed +4.4% after it reported third-quarter net income of $537 million, or $0.51 per diluted share, with diluted earnings per share up 24% from a year earlier. The bank reported record revenue alongside a stronger net interest margin and higher investment-banking fees.
Sector leader MSCI Inc ended +5.1% after posting third-quarter results that featured revenue growth and higher adjusted earnings per share. The financial index provider benefited from record asset-based fees and strong recurring net-new sales.
Those earnings results arrived as easing oil prices and corporate earnings supported equities. Downside across the sector was minimal: the steepest decliner among constituents, W. R. Berkley Corp, settled -1.2%.
Quality and Fund Profile
EasyAlpha evaluates every stock against its industry peers, where companies graded A or B reflect stronger fundamentals and historically have carried a lower risk of large drawdowns than companies graded D or E.
Over a longer horizon, XLF stands +8.0% over the past 100 sessions, +6.7% over the past six months, and +5.6% over the past twelve months. That multi-month resilience contrasts with a -0.3% return over the past month, showing that Tuesday's advance took place within a broader period of intermediate consolidation.

How grades work
Every day we grade each company against the other companies in its sector, looking at its finances, how its stock trades, and what the market is signaling. The result is one simple letter.
- AExcellent quality
- BGood quality
- CAverage quality
- DBelow average
- EWeakest quality
A grade measures quality against the other companies in a sector, from historical data. It is not a prediction, not a price target, and not advice. A company can be graded A and still fall.
