Across the stocks we grade in Financials, 64.0% of the portfolio sits in companies graded A or B. Breadth within the sector was wide on Thursday, October 22, with 77.5% of member stocks advancing. The cap-weighted sector ended +1.0%, but the equal-weight return stood at +1.6%, demonstrating that smaller and medium-sized constituents did more of the work than the largest institutions. The exchange-traded fund Financial Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLF) finished +1.1%, driven by exchange operator Nasdaq Inc at +7.5% and alternative asset manager Ares Management LP at +5.8%. Our sources show no reported driver for the sector's overall advance, which came even as broader markets faced pressure from concerns over artificial intelligence spending and climbing oil prices. Financial shares also saw company-specific support, with Nasdaq Inc advancing after reporting third quarter results that featured record annualized recurring revenue.

The sector's resilience stood out against a divided market backdrop where 5 of the 11 sectors rose. Separately, Goldman Sachs unit GS Finance Corp. filed to offer autocallable securities linked to an exchange-traded bank fund. Not every financial constituent joined the advance, however. Retail brokerage Robinhood Markets Inc served as the sector's main drag, ending -5.2%, though our sources show no reported driver behind the decline.

The exchange-traded fund Financial Select Sector SPDR Fund provides access to the group with $51.0 billion in net assets at an expense ratio of 0.08%. The vehicle's move to $56.65 on Thursday, October 22 extends longer-term strength, with the fund standing at +10.1% over the past 100 sessions.

EasyAlpha grades each company against its industry peers. Under this peer-relative framework, companies graded A or B have stronger fundamentals, and historically they have carried a lower risk of large drawdowns than companies graded D or E. That historical record offers context on portfolio quality, but it is never a guarantee for any single stock, and a strong grade does not prevent a fall.

How grades work

Every day we grade each company against the other companies in its sector, looking at its finances, how its stock trades, and what the market is signaling. The result is one simple letter.

  • AExcellent quality
  • BGood quality
  • CAverage quality
  • DBelow average
  • EWeakest quality
How grades work →

A grade measures quality against the other companies in a sector, from historical data. It is not a prediction, not a price target, and not advice. A company can be graded A and still fall.
