Broad gains among mid-tier financials offset softness in the largest commercial banks on Thursday, October 1, keeping the sector steady. Inside the Financial Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLF), an exchange-traded fund managing $54.6 billion in sector assets, 63.5% of member stocks posted gains. The equal-weighted sector move of +0.4% outpaced the cap-weighted return of +0.2%, showing that smaller constituents did more work than the mega-cap lenders. Early pressure stemmed from bond markets, where rising yields created headwinds for rate-sensitive banks. Conditions settled as benchmark Treasury yields eased after seven straight advances. That moderation helped broader equity markets stabilize late in the session.

Performance across the group highlighted the split between specialized financial services and traditional depository institutions. Financial data provider FactSet Research Systems Inc paced gainers at +2.9%, while insurance provider Hartford Financial Services Group was +2.8%. Elsewhere among financial services firms, Broadridge nominated Srinivas Tallapragada to its board of directors. In contrast, large money-center lenders lagged, with Citigroup Inc. closing at -1.9%. Individual banking institutions also faced specific headwinds during the session, such as a $39 million settlement agreed to by Merrill Lynch.

The sector's modest advance occurred on a day when 5 of the 11 sectors rose. The Financial Select Sector SPDR Fund closed +0.1% at $53.47, reflecting steady conditions across equity markets. Over longer timeframes, the fund is -6.5% over the past month, +4.5% over the past 100 sessions, +8.0% over the past six months, and +0.1% over the past twelve months.

The fund operates with an expense ratio of 0.08%, while 63.1% of its graded weight sits in companies graded A or B. EasyAlpha grades each company against its industry peers. Historically, companies graded A or B have stronger fundamentals and carry a lower risk of large drawdowns than companies graded D or E.

  • AExcellent quality
  • BGood quality
  • CAverage quality
  • DBelow average
  • EWeakest quality
How grades work →

A grade measures quality against the other companies in a sector, from historical data. It is not a prediction, not a price target, and not advice. A company can be graded A and still fall.
