The exchange-traded fund Financial Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLF) closed +0.2% on Tuesday, October 6, reflecting steady breadth as 62.2% of the sector's stocks advanced. The cap-weighted sector and equal-weighted measure settled at +0.2% and +0.2%, showing that gains were distributed evenly across large and small constituents rather than driven by a few mega-cap names. High-quality holdings anchor the group, with 63.1% of the fund's graded weight sitting in companies graded A or B. This measured advance came as lower bond yields and steady energy prices supported broader equity markets ahead of upcoming corporate earnings reports.

Across the broader market, 10 of the 11 sectors rose, with financial stocks participating quietly. Leading the sector, Assurant, Inc. finished +1.7%, while Interactive Brokers Group Inc was +1.7%. On the downside, Robinhood Markets Inc recorded the day's steepest decline among sector members, finishing -1.8%. The narrow spread between the day's top and bottom performers underscored the calm tone across trading desks.

In private capital markets, Citi-backed fintech firm Capitolis was valued at about $2 billion in its latest funding round. Across public markets, financial stocks traded without major company-specific news releases or disruptive corporate announcements, allowing macroeconomic factors and interest-rate expectations to set the pace for the sector.

Over the past month, XLF is -7.1%, giving back ground after an extended run earlier in the year. Despite that recent pullback, the sector maintains positive medium-term trajectory across multi-month holding periods. The fund is +5.3% over the past 100 sessions and +5.5% over the past six months, finishing Tuesday, October 6 at $54.00.

How grades work

Every day we grade each company against the other companies in its sector, looking at its finances, how its stock trades, and what the market is signaling. The result is one simple letter.

  • AExcellent quality
  • BGood quality
  • CAverage quality
  • DBelow average
  • EWeakest quality
How grades work →

A grade measures quality against the other companies in a sector, from historical data. It is not a prediction, not a price target, and not advice. A company can be graded A and still fall.
