EasyAlpha's numbers show a defensive session for the Financials sector on Wednesday, October 14. The sector's quality foundation remained solid, with 63.6% of the graded weight anchored in companies graded A or B. Yet breadth inside the group was narrow, as only 35.2% of its member companies managed to advance. The sector's primary vehicle, the exchange-traded fund Financial Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLF), closed -0.5% at $54.52. Performance within the portfolio diverged sharply: steep selling in Robinhood Markets Inc, which finished -8.5%, weighed on the fund, while exchange operators such as Cboe Global Markets Inc provided a partial counterweight by finishing +3.0%. The broader retreat gathered pace after accelerating inflation data increased bets on further Federal Reserve rate hikes.

The macro data challenged hopes for imminent monetary easing. A morning report revealed that annual consumer price inflation reached 3.7% in September. Selling was felt across the broader market, where 3 of the 11 sectors rose. The sector's cap-weighted move of -0.7% was nearly identical to its equal-weighted return of -0.8%, indicating that selling was evenly distributed between the sector's largest components and its smaller members.

Beyond the macro headwinds facing lenders, company-specific developments amplified selling in retail brokerage. Shares of Robinhood fell after analysts downgraded the stock and cut their price target, citing elevated valuation and pre-earnings uncertainty. The company had previously announced that it will release its third-quarter financial results on October 27, 2026. In contrast, CME Group Inc ended +2.7%, though our sources show no reported driver for the move. Elsewhere across the sector, insurer The Hartford announced an operational reorganization combining its data, artificial intelligence, and technology operations.

Over the past month, the fund is -4.1%, reflecting recent pressure across financial services. Over longer periods, however, performance has held up better, with the fund standing at +2.4% over the past twelve months.

How grades work

Every day we grade each company against the other companies in its sector, looking at its finances, how its stock trades, and what the market is signaling. The result is one simple letter.

  • AExcellent quality
  • BGood quality
  • CAverage quality
  • DBelow average
  • EWeakest quality
How grades work →

A grade measures quality against the other companies in a sector, from historical data. It is not a prediction, not a price target, and not advice. A company can be graded A and still fall.
