Across the Financials sector, 64.0% of the portfolio weight sits in companies graded A or B by EasyAlpha. Breadth leaned negative on Friday, October 30, with 44.7% of member stocks advancing. The cap-weighted sector settled -0.8%, while an equal-weighted measure ended -0.3%, indicating that smaller names did more of the work in driving the decline. The Financial Select Sector SPDR Fund, an exchange-traded fund tracking the group under the ticker XLF, closed -0.8% at $56.51. Individual performance diverged sharply across the board: Global Payments Inc posted +13.0% and Cboe Global Markets Inc finished +6.8%, while Coinbase Global Inc settled -10.6%. The broader tape was pressured by steep valuation losses in technology and semiconductor equities, but financial stocks held up with smaller losses than tech throughout the session.

The day's strongest gainer, Global Payments Inc, rallied after reports emerged that private equity firm Clayton, Dubilier & Rice was exploring a buyout alongside GTCR. While discussions remained preliminary, the prospect of a take-private transaction drove strong investor demand for the payments processor. Exchange operator Cboe Global Markets Inc also supported the sector after reporting record earnings per share, 18% net-revenue growth, a raised revenue-growth target, and reduced expense guidance. Bank of America hired senior power banker Manheimer from Morgan Stanley.

On the downside, Coinbase Global Inc faced heavy selling following quarterly results that revealed declines in revenue and transaction revenue, leaving reported profits heavily reliant on paper gains from digital asset holdings. Pressure escalated after a multi-billion-dollar security breach at crypto exchange Binance prompted an asset freeze and triggered broad declines across cryptocurrencies, dragging digital asset-linked equities sharply lower.

The broader market reflected selective risk aversion across Wall Street, as 5 of the 11 sectors rose. Despite the session's decline, the financial sector has maintained positive medium-term momentum. The fund has posted +5.7% over the past month and stands at +9.6% over the past six months, with a twelve-month return of +8.2%.

How grades work

Every day we grade each company against the other companies in its sector, looking at its finances, how its stock trades, and what the market is signaling. The result is one simple letter.

  • AExcellent quality
  • BGood quality
  • CAverage quality
  • DBelow average
  • EWeakest quality
How grades work →

A grade measures quality against the other companies in a sector, from historical data. It is not a prediction, not a price target, and not advice. A company can be graded A and still fall.
