The Financials sector recorded -1.2% on Wednesday, September 30, with weak internal participation as only 13.2% of its member stocks advanced. Larger-capitalization holdings weighed more heavily on the session than the broader group, pulling the cap-weighted sector below the equal-weighted return of -0.9%. Through the exchange-traded fund Financial Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLF), quality across the group remains strong, with 63.1% of the fund's graded assets held in companies graded A or B. Selling across the group unfolded as climbing long-term Treasury yields pressured equity valuations across the broader market. Although early trading saw support from cooler inflation numbers, resilient economic growth data curbed expectations for rapid interest rate cuts, pushing yields higher and keeping financial stocks on the defensive.

On a day when 3 of the 11 sectors rose, participation within the sector remained thin. Cboe Global Markets Inc led gainers with a close of +5.1%, while FactSet Research Systems Inc finished at +3.8%. On the downside, Robinhood Markets Inc logged -3.2%, the steepest retreat among sector holdings. Our sources show no reported company-specific driver for these individual stock moves, indicating that general market rate dynamics guided trading. Elsewhere in sector developments, Morgan Stanley Investment Management announced the liquidation of an index exchange-traded fund.

At Wednesday's close of $53.38, the exchange-traded fund Financial Select Sector SPDR Fund sits at -7.5% over the past month. EasyAlpha grades each company against its industry peers. Companies graded A or B have stronger fundamentals, and historically they have carried a lower risk of large drawdowns than companies graded D or E. With 63.1% of the fund's graded weight concentrated in those top two tiers, the portfolio remains anchored in higher-quality businesses even as macro pressures drive day-to-day fluctuations.

  • EWeakest quality
How grades work →

A grade measures quality against the other companies in a sector, from historical data. It is not a prediction, not a price target, and not advice. A company can be graded A and still fall.
