The Financials sector closed at -0.4% on Tuesday, October 13. Market breadth was narrow, with only 37.0% of the sector's S&P 500 members posting gains. The sector's core vehicle, the exchange-traded fund Financial Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLF), finished at -0.4%. High-quality companies anchor the fund, with 63.6% of its graded weight concentrated in stocks graded A or B against their industry peers. Performance inside the group diverged widely. Fidelity National Information Services Inc topped advancers at +2.8%. Alternative asset manager KKR & Co. Inc. lagged at -4.7%. That pressure tracked the opening round of third-quarter bank earnings. JPMorgan Chase missed earnings projections. Citigroup shares dropped 3.6%.
Wells Fargo shares dropped 1.7%. Those results offset stronger performance at Goldman Sachs, which generated $18.68 billion in quarterly revenue. Major lenders also warned that high interest rates and inflation could pressure consumers. Broader financial markets also contended with falling Treasury yields and positioning ahead of inflation data. Across the wider market, 4 of the 11 sectors rose.
Outside traditional banking, alternative asset managers faced specific selling pressure. KKR & Co. Inc. came under pressure after analysts cut their price target on the stock to $103 from $118. The revision cited expectations of softer realization activity ahead of upcoming quarterly reports. That reduction drove renewed pressure on the stock as investors weighed the lower price target.
Erie Indemnity Company finished at +2.6%. Separately, Bank of America filed a Form FWP in regulatory filings.
The session showed consistent selling across company sizes. The sector's cap-weighted move matched its equal-weighted return of -0.4%. That parity indicates the session's softness was broad rather than concentrated in a few mega-cap institutions.

How grades work
Every day we grade each company against the other companies in its sector, looking at its finances, how its stock trades, and what the market is signaling. The result is one simple letter.
- AExcellent quality
- BGood quality
- CAverage quality
- DBelow average
- EWeakest quality
A grade measures quality against the other companies in a sector, from historical data. It is not a prediction, not a price target, and not advice. A company can be graded A and still fall.
