Shares of FCX fell sharply on Thursday, September 10, declining 6.6% as trading volume reached 1.6x the daily average. The drop tracked a sudden reversal in physical copper markets after reports indicated the White House is undecided on imposing tariffs on refined copper. Ahead of the session, copper prices had climbed this year as metal moved into domestic warehouses on tariff speculation. When tariff doubts emerged, benchmark copper contracts on the London Metal Exchange retreated from record highs of $14,875 per metric ton.
The pullback quickly reverberated through the mining sector. As the scarcity trade unwound, peer copper producers Southern Copper and Teck Resources each dropped 7% during the session. For FCX, Thursday's decline checked a sustained rally, though the stock still sits at +40.2% so far this year.
EasyAlpha grades Freeport-McMoran Copper & Gold Inc D against its industry peers in the S&P 500, down from B in the latest analysis. In EasyAlpha's historical studies, companies graded A or B show stronger fundamentals and have carried a lower risk of large drawdowns than companies graded D or E. The company carried that D grade into Thursday's trading, pairing earnings quality as its strongest scored dimension against momentum as its primary watch item.
The price drop also highlights underlying fundamental friction. Recent financial results show that quarterly revenue growth stood at -7.3% year over year. Meanwhile, shares trade at 34.9 times trailing earnings and carry a forward price-to-earnings ratio of 19.1. That valuation leaves limited cushion when commodity markets face regulatory uncertainty.

How grades work
Every day we grade each company against the other companies in its sector, looking at its finances, how its stock trades, and what the market is signaling. The result is one simple letter.
- AExcellent quality
- BGood quality
- CAverage quality
- DBelow average
- EWeakest quality
A grade measures quality against the other companies in a sector, from historical data. It is not a prediction, not a price target, and not advice. A company can be graded A and still fall.
