  • Our read: EasyAlpha grades FCX B, indicating good quality against its Basic Materials peers, with earnings quality serving as its main strength against watchfulness on valuation.
  • The day: The shares fell 6.6% to $71.22 as policy doubts over potential U.S. copper tariffs sparked a broad selloff in the metal.
  • Watching: Scheduled quarterly earnings on Thursday, October 22.

Copper mining equities slid sharply on Thursday following reports that the White House remains undecided on imposing tariffs on refined copper imports over concerns about rising domestic manufacturing costs. The policy uncertainty halted a record surge across copper producers, triggering a sudden pullback after copper contracts retreated from an all-time peak of $14,875 per metric ton on the London Metal Exchange. Trading volume in the stock reached 1.6x its 20-session average.

The pullback comes after an extended advance that leaves the shares +40.2% this year and 104.8% above their 52-week low. EasyAlpha grades the company B, indicating good quality relative to its industry peers in the S&P 500. Historically, companies graded A or B demonstrate stronger fundamentals and experience a lower risk of large drawdowns than companies graded D or E.

The company's primary operational support is its earnings quality, highlighted by a return on equity of 14.8% and a profit margin of 11.4%. Against that operational health, the year's price climb has elevated valuation as the main risk factor. The stock trades at a trailing price-to-earnings multiple of 37.6 and a forward multiple of 18.1, even as quarterly revenue registered -7.3% year over year in the most recent quarter.

Wall Street analysts remain largely constructive, with 78.3% of 23 covering firms maintaining buy ratings. The shares carry a beta of 1.40, reflecting how quickly mining equities can react when commodity sentiment shifts. The company next reports financial results on Thursday, October 22.

How grades work →

A grade measures quality against the other companies in a sector, from historical data. It is not a prediction, not a price target, and not advice. A company can be graded A and still fall.
