  • Our read: Gartner is graded A by EasyAlpha while 20.0% of 15 analyst ratings are buys, showing solid earnings quality among industry peers in the S&P 500 while its debt load remains the primary area to monitor.
  • The day: The shares rose 5.7% to close at $219.56 on 2.2x typical volume as brokerages lifted their price targets following meetings at the company's annual technology symposium.
  • Watching: Third-quarter financial results scheduled for release on Tuesday, November 3.

Gartner shares posted a solid gain on Tuesday, October 20, as trading volume reached 2.2x the 20-session average. The advance followed price target increases after brokerages cited double-digit attendance growth at the company's annual technology symposium along with executive confidence in long-term contract-value acceleration.

Survey findings released at the conference revealed that 44% of chief executive officers struggle to show financial returns from artificial intelligence, even though three-quarters plan to expand their overall technology spending. At the same time, analysis presented around the event warned that up to $3.5 trillion in infrastructure investments is at risk because capital expenditures are significantly outpacing near-term commercial returns.

EasyAlpha's metrics show why the underlying business remains resilient. EasyAlpha grades Gartner A relative to its industry peers in the S&P 500. In our historical research across market cycles, companies graded A or B have demonstrated stronger fundamentals and carried a lower risk of large drawdowns than companies graded D or E. The company demonstrates high earnings quality, delivering a profit margin of 12.0% and a return on equity of 113.6%.

Yet the broader market consensus does not share that enthusiasm. While EasyAlpha places the company in its top quality tier, Wall Street analysts remain cautious: only 20.0% of the 15 ratings in the consensus are buys. Following Tuesday's session, Gartner closed 13.7% above the average analyst price target of $189.54. Separately, quarterly revenue growth sits at -0.6% year over year. In addition, the company's debt load remains an important area to watch.

Recent trading has helped the shares recover, climbing +19.8% over the past month, though the stock remains -13.0% so far this year. Whether the company can achieve faster revenue growth and resolve the tension between its top grade and conservative analyst targets will become clearer when Gartner reports quarterly earnings on Tuesday, November 3.

How grades work

  • AExcellent quality
  • BGood quality
  • CAverage quality
  • DBelow average
  • EWeakest quality
How grades work →

A grade measures quality against the other companies in a sector, from historical data. It is not a prediction, not a price target, and not advice. A company can be graded A and still fall.
