  • Watching: Scheduled quarterly earnings on Thursday, November 5.

Shares of Gen Digital Inc. (GEN) dropped 12.0% on Thursday, September 24 to close at $23.07, as trading volume surged to 4.6x the 20-session average. The decline marked the stock's second-largest single-day drop over the past year and its largest move since Friday, May 8. The session extended a losing streak to three consecutive sessions, leaving the stock -23.6% over the past week and -21.3% over the past month.

The sharp drop followed reports that the consumer cybersecurity company made an initial takeover approach for web hosting provider GoDaddy as it seeks to expand beyond security technology. Further reporting confirmed the takeover approach while noting that discussions remain preliminary and might not lead to a transaction. An acquisition would give Gen Digital access to more than 20 million small-business and individual customers, but the prospect of a multi-billion-dollar transaction weighed on the shares.

The selloff hit a stock that EasyAlpha already grades E, placing Gen Digital Inc. in the weakest quality tier among its industry peers. Across historical data, companies graded A or B have stronger fundamentals and have carried a lower risk of large drawdowns than companies graded D or E. In EasyAlpha's assessment entering the session, liquidity was the primary area to watch.

The stock brought valuation into the day as its main strength. Gen Digital Inc. trades at a trailing price-to-earnings ratio of 16.0 and a forward price-to-earnings ratio of 9.3, backed by a profit margin of 20.7%. Wall Street analysts maintain a moderate stance, with 40.0% of covering analysts rating the stock a buy. Their average price target of $33.00 sits 43.0% above Thursday's close. Even so, Thursday's decline leaves the stock 27.1% below its 52-week high, testing whether modest valuation multiples can offset sudden acquisition risk.

How grades work →

A grade measures quality against the other companies in a sector, from historical data. It is not a prediction, not a price target, and not advice. A company can be graded A and still fall.
