The Industrials sector finished +0.2% on Thursday, September 17, trailing the broader market even as 10 of the 11 sectors rose across the session. Inside the sector, breadth was evenly split, with 51.9% of member companies moving higher, matching the sector's equal-weighted return of +0.2%. The exchange-traded fund Industrial Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLI), the primary vehicle tracking the sector, closed +0.2% at $169.01. Trading was anchored at the top by Generac Holdings Inc (+18.3%), but the group carries a lean fundamental profile: just 34.2% of the fund sits in companies graded A or B for quality relative to industry peers. That narrow quality foundation showed during the session, as a single outsized corporate contract failed to generate wider momentum across industrial manufacturing.
The session's primary catalyst centered on Generac, which surged after announcing a long-term commercial agreement to supply backup power generation equipment for Amazon data centers. Under the transaction terms, initial shipments across 2027 and 2028 are expected to total $2.4 billion, with total customer purchases potentially reaching up to $8 billion over the lifetime of the agreement alongside equity warrants.
Beyond that rally, the sector saw uneven performance across sub-industries. While Southwest Airlines Company (+3.0%) finished among the session gainers, commercial aerospace and heavy industrial manufacturers struggled to find wider traction despite aerospace suppliers announcing manufacturing facility expansions for parts production, and Copart Inc (-3.8%) paced the sector's decliners.
Over longer horizons, XLI stands at +11.8% over the past twelve months and +3.0% over the past six months. Shorter-term returns reflect a recent pullback across the sector, with the fund recording -7.9% over the past month.

How grades work
Every day we grade each company against the other companies in its sector, looking at its finances, how its stock trades, and what the market is signaling. The result is one simple letter.
- AExcellent quality
- BGood quality
- CAverage quality
- DBelow average
- EWeakest quality
A grade measures quality against the other companies in a sector, from historical data. It is not a prediction, not a price target, and not advice. A company can be graded A and still fall.
