52-week range
- Our read: EasyAlpha grades Graco D against its industry peers among the top 1,000 U.S. companies, down from B, pairing a sound debt load with a deteriorating price trend.
- The day: The shares dropped 15.3% to close at $69.28 as organic sales and adjusted earnings missed quarterly expectations.
- Watching: Fourth-quarter performance against management's cautious guidance.
Graco suffered a sharp retreat on Thursday, October 22, falling 15.3% to close at $69.28. Trading volume surged to 3.8x its 20-session average as the stock logged its largest single-day decline over the past year. The selloff followed the company's third-quarter earnings report, which disappointed investors on top-line execution and operating margins.
While headline sales grew +3.3% year over year to $586 million, organic revenue excluded from recent transactions fell short of internal guidance. Adjusted earnings per share also missed consensus expectations. At the same time, adjusted operating margins contracted due to product and channel mix. Company regulatory filings showed that operating earnings fell 10%, burdened by unfavorable product mix and lower margins from acquired operations. Executive leadership pointed to delays in larger industrial projects, offering a cautious fourth-quarter outlook.
EasyAlpha evaluated Graco at D against its industry peers among the top 1,000 U.S. companies heading into the session, down from B in the prior evaluation. Across historical market cycles, companies graded A or B have demonstrated stronger fundamentals and carried lower risk of large drawdowns than those graded D or E. Graco's profile shows clear internal contrasts: the company carries a modest debt load, and the business generates an attractive return on equity of 21.2%. However, its primary vulnerability entering the day was its price trend, which had weakened steadily.
That vulnerability was magnified by valuation. Even after Thursday's retreat, Graco trades at a trailing price-to-earnings ratio of 26.4. The steep drop leaves the stock just 2.3% above its 52-week low of $67.73. Wall Street was already hesitant heading into the report, with only 30.0% of covering analysts recommending the shares as a buy. When a company carrying an elevated valuation multiple faces sudden project delays, market repricing can prove unforgiving.

How grades work
Every day we grade each company against the other companies in its sector, looking at its finances, how its stock trades, and what the market is signaling. The result is one simple letter.
- AExcellent quality
- BGood quality
- CAverage quality
- DBelow average
- EWeakest quality
A grade measures quality against the other companies in a sector, from historical data. It is not a prediction, not a price target, and not advice. A company can be graded A and still fall.
