The Technology Select Sector SPDR Fund, an exchange-traded fund that tracks the sector under the ticker XLK, closed -0.7% on Thursday, October 15. Companies graded A or B make up 38.0% of the fund, leaving the majority of its weight in average or lower quality tiers. Inside the sector, breadth leaned negative as 47.9% of its S&P 500 members posted gains. Hardware weakness drove the fund lower, led by Hewlett Packard Enterprise Co at -7.1%, which overshadowed advances in software stocks such as Fair Isaac Corporation at +7.0%. That hardware drag emerged after an analyst downgrade warned that recent enterprise server growth reflected higher component costs rather than expanding artificial intelligence demand.

The selling was concentrated among the sector's largest equipment providers. The cap-weighted Information Technology sector finished -0.6%, while an equal-weighted measure of the same companies recorded +0.3%. Across the wider market, 7 of the 11 sectors rose, leaving technology among the few groups that lost ground on Thursday. Broader macroeconomic pressures compounded the sector's hardware troubles, as hotter consumer price inflation raised rate-hike concerns and boosted interest-rate bets across Wall Street.

Software and data services companies provided what resilience the sector managed to show. In addition to the advance in Fair Isaac Corporation, Intuit Inc posted +6.4%. For Fair Isaac Corporation, our sources show no reported company-specific catalyst behind Thursday's move. The split between software resilience and hardware selling highlights the uneven distribution of returns across the sector, where specialized software firms outpaced the heavy equipment providers.

Because the fund is weighted by market capitalization, XLK concentrates risk in its largest holdings rather than spreading exposure evenly across its members. When concerns over hardware spending hit companies like Hewlett Packard Enterprise Co, the vehicle absorbs the impact regardless of strength in software.

How grades work

Every day we grade each company against the other companies in its sector, looking at its finances, how its stock trades, and what the market is signaling. The result is one simple letter.

  • AExcellent quality
  • BGood quality
  • CAverage quality
  • DBelow average
  • EWeakest quality
How grades work →

A grade measures quality against the other companies in a sector, from historical data. It is not a prediction, not a price target, and not advice. A company can be graded A and still fall.
