  • Our read: EasyAlpha grades Hasbro Inc C against its S&P 500 industry peers, denoting average quality, with profitability as its strongest scored dimension and the dividend as the watch item, even with Wall Street analysts overwhelmingly bullish.
  • The day: The shares surged +11.2% to close at $109.52 after the company beat quarterly profit forecasts on record card game revenue and raised full-year guidance.
  • Watching: The distance to the consensus analyst price target of $111.38 as the stock enters new 52-week high territory.

Hasbro shares marked their largest single-day advance over the past year on Tuesday. Trading volume reached 4.2x the 20-session average as the stock broke well above its prior 52-week high of $104.60. The sharp advance followed a third-quarter earnings report that substantially topped Wall Street projections, led by adjusted earnings of $2.90 per share against an expected $1.86. Total quarterly revenue reached $1.60 billion, marking a year-over-year change of +16.2%.

The largest contributor to the quarter was the Wizards of the Coast and digital gaming segment. Franchise revenue for Magic: The Gathering exceeded $600 million in quarterly sales for the first time, reaching $616 million behind strong demand for collaborative releases. On the back of that expansion, management lifted its full-year guidance, projecting constant-currency revenue growth between 7% and 9%. The company also announced plans to double its share repurchases to at least $200 million for the year.

Tuesday's advance extended a broader run, with the shares trading +24.9% over the past month and +33.6% year to date. Wall Street sentiment is heavily tilted toward the company, with 86.7% of covering analysts rating the stock a buy. Following the session, the shares trade just 1.7% below the consensus price target.

EasyAlpha takes a more measured view of the business. In our framework, a C grade denotes average quality: a typical company for its industry group, which is where most stocks land. Companies graded A or B have stronger fundamentals and historically have carried a lower risk of large drawdowns than companies graded D or E. Hasbro entered Tuesday's session with a balanced profile rather than a top-tier one. Profitability is the firm's main operational strength, highlighted by a profit margin of 16.0% and a return on equity of 159.6%. The stock trades at 17.8 times trailing earnings.

The offsetting consideration in Hasbro's profile is the dividend. While profitability scores as the company's greatest asset, EasyAlpha identifies the dividend as the primary metric to monitor, with the shares currently offering a dividend yield of 2.9%.

How grades work

Every day we grade each company against the other companies in its sector, looking at its finances, how its stock trades, and what the market is signaling. The result is one simple letter.

  • AExcellent quality
  • BGood quality
  • CAverage quality
  • DBelow average
  • EWeakest quality
How grades work →

A grade measures quality against the other companies in a sector, from historical data. It is not a prediction, not a price target, and not advice. A company can be graded A and still fall.
