The Health Care Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLV), an exchange-traded fund tracking the sector, closed +0.4% on Monday, September 21 with 60.7% of its member stocks advancing. The broader Health Care sector finished +0.7% on a cap-weighted basis and +0.6% on an equal-weighted basis, indicating that the sector's largest constituents drove slightly more of the advance. High-quality holdings anchor the group, with 52.9% of the fund allocated to companies graded A or B by EasyAlpha. The session was led by Moderna Inc, which closed +12.3% after late-breaking clinical abstracts for its individualized cancer therapy were accepted for presentation at a major medical congress.
Moderna's sharp rise followed news that Phase 3 trial data for its individualized neoantigen therapy with Merck earned a presidential symposium slot at the upcoming European Society for Medical Oncology congress. The therapy, studied in combination with Keytruda for resected melanoma, has drawn increased focus ahead of detailed clinical presentations scheduled for late October. Other sector components also gained ground, including Agilent Technologies Inc, which finished +3.5%. On the downside, The Cooper Companies, Inc trailed the sector, finishing -2.1%.
Major pharmaceutical companies also advanced long-term capital plans during the session. Eli Lilly broke ground on a $6.5 billion manufacturing facility in Texas to expand its domestic production network. The project reflects ongoing commitment to manufacturing infrastructure across large drugmakers, even as individual stock moves remained mixed throughout the trading day.
Across the broader market, 7 of the 11 sectors rose, creating a constructive backdrop for healthcare shares. While XLV has moved -2.0% over the past month, its longer-term trajectory remains positive, recording +16.7% over six months and +23.1% over the past twelve months.

How grades work
Every day we grade each company against the other companies in its sector, looking at its finances, how its stock trades, and what the market is signaling. The result is one simple letter.
- AExcellent quality
- BGood quality
- CAverage quality
- DBelow average
- EWeakest quality
A grade measures quality against the other companies in a sector, from historical data. It is not a prediction, not a price target, and not advice. A company can be graded A and still fall.
