Health Care faced broad selling on Friday, September 4, with only 13.6% of its stocks advancing as the cap-weighted sector finished -1.1% and the equal-weighted version ended -0.9%. The Health Care Select Sector SPDR Fund, an exchange-traded fund that tracks the sector under ticker XLV, closed -1.0% at $171.46. The downturn was fueled by macroeconomic pressure after stronger-than-expected jobs data pushed Treasury yields higher, lifting rate expectations and dampening equities on a day when 3 of the 11 sectors rose.
Company-specific news added to the sector's pressure. Bristol Myers Squibb weighed on sentiment after pausing clinical trials for its autoimmune therapy zola-cel due to safety concerns. Meanwhile, Veeva Systems Inc Class A (-3.3%) finished as the sector's steepest decliner. Large pharmaceutical makers also continue adjusting to patent transitions, as AbbVie works to navigate shrinking Humira sales while relying on newer drugs to offset lost revenue.
Despite the widespread retreat, select health care names found buyers. Medical device maker Boston Scientific Corp (+1.8%) led the gainers, supported by DaVita HealthCare Partners Inc (+1.3%). Clinical trial updates also provided bright spots across biotechnology, where Arrowhead Pharmaceuticals presented trial results showing a 78% reduction in pancreatitis events for its drug plozasiran, while Tyra Biosciences scheduled a presentation of dabogratinib clinical study data.
Over longer horizons, Health Care has maintained durable momentum despite the session's retreat. The exchange-traded fund XLV has returned +4.3% over the past month, +11.2% over the past six months, and +24.3% over the past twelve months. The broader group continues to show positive multi-month gains across the sector even as short-term interest rate shifts create day-to-day turbulence.

How grades work
Every day we grade each company against the other companies in its sector, looking at its finances, how its stock trades, and what the market is signaling. The result is one simple letter.
- AExcellent quality
- BGood quality
- CAverage quality
- DBelow average
- EWeakest quality
A grade measures quality against the other companies in a sector, from historical data. It is not a prediction, not a price target, and not advice. A company can be graded A and still fall.
