On Friday, October 23, Health Care Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLV), an exchange-traded fund tracking the sector, closed -1.1%. EasyAlpha grades the stocks in the sector against their industry peers, and 53.0% of the fund's graded weight sits in companies graded A or B. That high-quality tilt did not prevent a broad decline across the group, as only 23.3% of sector members advanced during the session. Heavyweight names exerted the greatest pressure: the cap-weighted sector closed -1.1%, whereas an equal-weighted version of the same stocks closed -0.8%. Our sources show no reported sector-wide driver behind the session's decline.

Company announcements inside the sector offered little counterweight to the session's decline. Gilead Sciences entered an agreement to pay nearly $1.3 billion for an oral peptide program from PepStar Therapeutics, seeking to expand its pipeline in inflammatory bowel disease. Elsewhere in drug development, Roche entered a licensing and collaboration agreement with Zymeworks. In individual trading, Moderna slipped following clinical trial results for its melanoma vaccine that missed elevated expectations, though that weakness remained largely confined to the company. Beyond these isolated corporate items, our sources show no reported regulatory shock or sector-wide catalyst.

Inside the sector, selling was broad and concentrated in larger names. Cigna Corp was the weakest performer of the session, finishing -2.8%. Gains were sparse and modest: Intuitive Surgical Inc was the primary gainer, closing +1.9%. Across the broader market, 3 of the 11 sectors rose, and healthcare shared in the general market pullback.

The close at $179.28 interrupted a recent stretch of positive performance for XLV. Over longer horizons the fund remains well ahead, sitting at +5.5% over the past month, +21.5% over the past 100 sessions, and +25.0% over the past six months.

How grades work

Every day we grade each company against the other companies in its sector, looking at its finances, how its stock trades, and what the market is signaling. The result is one simple letter.

  • AExcellent quality
  • BGood quality
  • CAverage quality
  • DBelow average
  • EWeakest quality
How grades work →

A grade measures quality against the other companies in a sector, from historical data. It is not a prediction, not a price target, and not advice. A company can be graded A and still fall.
