Health Care stocks advanced on Tuesday, September 1 as heavy buying in mega-cap holdings carried the group through a session of narrow market breadth. Health Care Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLV), an exchange-traded fund tracking the sector, gained +0.7% even though only 43.9% of its member companies finished in positive territory. The cap-weighted sector move of +0.7% outpaced the equal-weighted return of +0.1%, demonstrating that the largest companies accounted for the bulk of the advance. Within the portfolio, 50.7% of the fund's graded weight is concentrated in companies graded A or B, which have stronger fundamentals and historically have carried a lower risk of large drawdowns than companies graded D or E.

The sector's outperformance occurred as equity investors adopted a defensive posture against a backdrop of rising crude oil prices and climbing Treasury yields.

Individual Drivers Company-specific catalysts gave an extra boost to several prominent holdings. Moderna Inc (+9.9%) posted the sector's largest gain as investors continued to buy shares following late-stage clinical trial data for its individualized melanoma vaccine candidate. CVS Health Corp (+3.9%) also supported the sector after positive Wall Street coverage underscored attractive long-term earnings potential and the possibility of resumed share buybacks. On the downside, ResMed Inc (-3.6%) weighed on performance as the sector's weakest constituent.

Market Context and Fund Profile Sector leadership was scarce across the broader equity market, where 4 of the 11 sectors rose. The gain lifted XLV to a closing price of $171.67, extending its move over the past month to +5.8%. That top-heavy concentration shapes the behavior of Health Care Select Sector SPDR Fund, which channels $41.7 billion across the sector at an expense ratio of 0.08% and reflects the strength of its largest constituents rather than the broader average.

How grades work

Every day we grade each company against the other companies in its sector, looking at its finances, how its stock trades, and what the market is signaling. The result is one simple letter.

  • AExcellent quality
  • BGood quality
  • CAverage quality
  • DBelow average
  • EWeakest quality
How grades work →

A grade measures quality against the other companies in a sector, from historical data. It is not a prediction, not a price target, and not advice. A company can be graded A and still fall.
