EasyAlpha grades the stocks across Health Care, where 54.7% of the graded weight sits in companies graded A or B for quality. On Friday, September 25, broad strength supported the sector as 67.2% of its members finished higher, with health insurers driving the advance. That breadth helped the exchange-traded Health Care Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLV) finish +0.5% to close at $170.72, led by CVS Health Corp at +4.8% and Humana Inc at +4.6% after an analyst upgrade cited improving prospects for Medicare Advantage quality ratings.

Participation across the sector showed smaller and mid-sized members doing more of the work than the largest companies. The cap-weighted sector closed +0.5%, while the equal-weighted sector finished +0.6%. The move occurred on a broadly positive day across the market, where 8 of the 11 sectors rose. On the downside, IQVIA Holdings Inc finished -1.9% as the sector's main laggard.

Major pharmaceutical companies navigated contrasting clinical developments. Merck and partner Daiichi Sankyo withdrew their U.S. application for a lung cancer therapy. Meanwhile, Johnson & Johnson highlighted long-term survival benefits for Carvykti in multiple myeloma, alongside progress across key therapies in clinical trials.

Medical technology and generic drugmakers also made notable moves. Intuitive Surgical expanded its push into the cardiac market with a CE mark. Separately, Viatris sued Novo Nordisk seeking permission to market generic Wegovy.

Cost and liquidity remain defining traits of the vehicle, where Health Care Select Sector SPDR Fund deploys its $43.9 billion in assets at an expense ratio of 0.08% to provide broad sector exposure. The session contributes to a solid medium-term advance, with XLV logging +17.5% over the past 100 sessions and +27.3% over the past twelve months, alongside -1.6% over the past month.

  • AExcellent quality
  • BGood quality
  • CAverage quality
  • DBelow average
  • EWeakest quality
How grades work →

A grade measures quality against the other companies in a sector, from historical data. It is not a prediction, not a price target, and not advice. A company can be graded A and still fall.
