On Thursday, September 17, the Health Care sector finished +0.7%, while the exchange-traded fund tracking it, Health Care Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLV), closed +0.6% at $168.81. The session favored larger constituents, as the cap-weighted return of +0.7% topped the equal-weighted return of +0.2%, and 57.6% of sector members advanced as 10 of the 11 sectors rose. Inside the fund, 53.5% of graded weight sits in companies graded A or B, tiers that feature stronger fundamentals and have historically carried a lower risk of large drawdowns than companies graded D or E. Sector performance was led by Moderna Inc (+8.5%) and Charles River Laboratories (+3.0%), backed by a series of clinical and regulatory milestones across drug development and medical devices.

The day's top gainer, Moderna Inc (+8.5%), rallied after clinical trial results for its personalized melanoma cancer vaccine showed a significant reduction in recurrence risk, extending a strong monthly run. Charles River Laboratories (+3.0%) followed. Elsewhere across pharmaceuticals, Bristol Myers Squibb presented two-year clinical data demonstrating sustained efficacy and consistent safety for Sotyktu in adults with active psoriatic arthritis. In medical technology, Medtronic secured regulatory clearance for its LigaSure RAS Maryland jaw device, bringing vessel-sealing technology to its robotic-assisted surgery system.

Clinical progress also lifted biopharma sentiment as Biogen announced the publication of late-stage study results showing reduced proteinuria and stabilized kidney function in adolescent patients treated with Empaveli. On the downside, DaVita HealthCare Partners Inc (-5.5%) served as the sector's main drag, though our sources show no reported driver behind the session's decline. In managed care, UnitedHealthcare faced scrutiny after a federal audit sought a $46.9 million refund over alleged Medicare Advantage overpayments.

Over the past month, XLV has moved -0.5%, but the fund maintains a steady upward trajectory across longer periods, standing +15.1% over six months and +23.0% over the past twelve months.

How grades work

Every day we grade each company against the other companies in its sector, looking at its finances, how its stock trades, and what the market is signaling. The result is one simple letter.

  • AExcellent quality
  • BGood quality
  • CAverage quality
  • DBelow average
  • EWeakest quality
How grades work →

A grade measures quality against the other companies in a sector, from historical data. It is not a prediction, not a price target, and not advice. A company can be graded A and still fall.
