On Thursday, September 24, the Health Care sector closed +0.6%, standing out on a session when 3 of the 11 sectors rose. That advance masked narrow participation: only 42.9% of the sector's S&P 500 members rose, with an equal-weighted return of +0.2% trailing the market-cap benchmark. The exchange-traded fund tracking the group, the Health Care Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLV), closed +0.6% at $169.89. With 51.4% of the fund's graded holdings in companies graded A or B, the move was powered by sharp single-stock gains after corporate presentations highlighted progress in oncology pipelines and introduced multi-year financial targets.

Moderna Inc led the sector's gainers, closing +7.0% as investors welcomed executive commentary detailing expansion across mRNA therapies. Charles River Laboratories finished +6.2% after management used an investor day presentation to introduce 2030 growth targets and reaffirm its 2026 financial guidance. Across the wider sector, news included Vertex Pharmaceuticals tracking kidney pipeline progress and Johnson & Johnson defending its depression treatment through a patent victory.

On the downside, DaVita HealthCare Partners Inc ranked among the sector's steepest decliners, ending the session at -4.6%, with our sources showing no company-specific catalyst behind the decline.

At an expense ratio of 0.08%, XLV packages $43.9 billion in sector exposure where risk management relies on underlying member quality. EasyAlpha grades each company against its industry peers. Companies graded A or B have stronger fundamentals, and historically they have carried a lower risk of large drawdowns than companies graded D or E.

The session leaves XLV at -3.1% over the past month, +17.4% across the past 100 sessions, and +24.6% over the past twelve months. Whether the sector can extend that longer-term trajectory will depend on broader industry breadth catching up to the handful of names setting today's pace.

  • AExcellent quality
  • BGood quality
  • CAverage quality
  • DBelow average
  • EWeakest quality
How grades work →

A grade measures quality against the other companies in a sector, from historical data. It is not a prediction, not a price target, and not advice. A company can be graded A and still fall.
