On Tuesday, September 15, the Health Care Select Sector SPDR Fund, an exchange-traded fund that tracks the sector under the ticker XLV, closed 0.0% at $167.67, while the broader Health Care sector finished -0.1%. Inside the group, 42.4% of member companies advanced, led by strong moves in life sciences tools and diagnostics providers Revvity Inc. (+9.1%) and Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc (+4.5%), which countered declines from laggards including Align Technology Inc (-3.9%). The sector held steady on a session when 2 of the 11 sectors rose across the market, supported by constructive commentary from industry executives.
Life sciences equipment suppliers provided the primary upward momentum. During investor conference presentations, Revvity highlighted expanding diagnostics momentum and a growing instrument backlog. At the same event, Thermo Fisher Scientific pointed to a return to 5% organic revenue growth as demand across biopharmaceutical research markets stabilized. Those updates helped reassure investors following several quarters of cautious client spending.
Regulatory and product announcements added further support across the broader group. Medtronic announced a collaboration with Sonus Microsystems to evaluate AI-enabled wearable ultrasound devices for maternal health monitoring in field studies funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. In medical devices, Beta Bionics secured regulatory clearance for a tubeless insulin patch pump compatible with continuous glucose monitors from Abbott and Dexcom. In biotechnology, Cogent Biosciences reported that regulators accepted its application for review of bezuclastinib in advanced systemic mastocytosis.
Performance across individual holdings showed slight divergence. While cap-weighted returns were -0.1%, the equal-weighted sector rose +0.2%, indicating firmer footing among mid-sized holdings even as large pharmaceutical names traded quietly. Over the past month, XLV has moved +0.2%, building on a gain of +12.0% over the past six months.

How grades work
Every day we grade each company against the other companies in its sector, looking at its finances, how its stock trades, and what the market is signaling. The result is one simple letter.
- AExcellent quality
- BGood quality
- CAverage quality
- DBelow average
- EWeakest quality
A grade measures quality against the other companies in a sector, from historical data. It is not a prediction, not a price target, and not advice. A company can be graded A and still fall.
