The Health Care sector showed resilience on Monday, September 28, with 65.5% of its member companies advancing on a day when 3 of the 11 sectors rose. The cap-weighted sector finished +0.3%, matching a +0.3% return for the equal-weighted measure, reflecting broad-based participation rather than a rally concentrated in a few mega-cap names. The exchange-traded fund Health Care Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLV) closed +0.3% at $171.24, underpinned by solid fundamental quality: 52.9% of its graded weight sits in companies earning an A or B grade. Gains were led by Viatris Inc, which finished +2.5%, and Intuitive Surgical Inc, which settled +2.4%. The broader strength followed a wave of positive regulatory milestones and licensing deals across the pharmaceutical and medical technology industries.

Corporate headlines provided a constructive backdrop for drugmakers and device manufacturers. AbbVie announced regulatory approval for its Parkinson's drug JUVMO. In oncology, Merck entered an exclusive global licensing agreement with SciBrunch Therapeutics for an oral cancer candidate. In the medical technology space, GE HealthCare formed a partnership to apply generative artificial intelligence to radiation therapy workflows, while an analyst raised the price target on Vertex Pharmaceuticals to $615 ahead of anticipated Phase 3 trial data.

Single-stock headwinds kept sector gains modest. Regeneron Pharmaceuticals Inc weighed most heavily on the group, finishing -4.5% after competitor Kodiak Sciences announced that its experimental eye disease therapies met primary Phase 3 endpoints and demonstrated non-inferiority to Regeneron's Eylea, raising new competitive concerns. Elsewhere, Boston Scientific faced product headwinds as regulators flagged a manufacturing recall for its angiographic catheters.

For investors tracking the group through Health Care Select Sector SPDR Fund, performance over the near term has been relatively quiet, with XLV posting -0.2% over the past month. Over longer stretches, however, the fund has maintained substantial upward momentum, logging +17.8% over the past 100 sessions, +19.1% over the past six months, and +26.4% over the past twelve months.

A grade measures quality against the other companies in a sector, from historical data. It is not a prediction, not a price target, and not advice. A company can be graded A and still fall.
