The Health Care sector moved slightly higher on Thursday, September 3, with 55.9% of its member stocks advancing as the cap-weighted sector rose +0.2%. The Health Care Select Sector SPDR Fund, an exchange-traded fund that tracks the sector under the ticker XLV, rose +0.2% to close at $173.29. The gain coincided with broader market strength after comments from Federal Reserve Governor Christopher Waller lowered expectations for near-term interest rate hikes. Although falling Treasury yields supported a broader rally led by technology stocks, healthcare advanced at a more modest pace on a day when 10 of the 11 sectors rose.
Performance across the group showed larger holdings doing slightly more of the work. The cap-weighted return of +0.2% outpaced the equal-weighted return of +0.1%, reflecting greater resilience among the largest companies in the sector. Gains were paced by IQVIA Holdings Inc (+3.0%) and Elevance Health Inc (+2.2%), which offset declines elsewhere in the sector. On the downside, Boston Scientific Corp (-2.9%) served as the most significant drag on the session.
Over the past month, XLV has gained +5.6%. EasyAlpha grades each company in the sector against its industry peers. Currently, 52.3% of the fund's graded weight sits in companies graded A or B. Historically, companies in these top tiers have demonstrated stronger fundamentals and carried a lower risk of large drawdowns than companies graded D or E, though a strong grade is not a guarantee against market losses. For investors who use the fund as a vehicle for the sector, Health Care Select Sector SPDR Fund holds $41.7 billion in managed assets while charging an expense ratio of 0.08% to access that underlying quality mix.

How grades work
Every day we grade each company against the other companies in its sector, looking at its finances, how its stock trades, and what the market is signaling. The result is one simple letter.
- AExcellent quality
- BGood quality
- CAverage quality
- DBelow average
- EWeakest quality
A grade measures quality against the other companies in a sector, from historical data. It is not a prediction, not a price target, and not advice. A company can be graded A and still fall.
