Broad participation lifted health care on Monday, September 14, with 91.2% of the sector's stocks advancing and 57.7% of the fund's graded weight concentrated in companies graded A or B. The exchange-traded fund Health Care Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLV) closed +1.4%, led higher by Boston Scientific Corp (+4.8%) and Centene Corp (+4.5%), while Universal Health Services Inc (-0.9%) was the primary source of drag. Market participants rotated into defensive sectors during the session. That shift came as technology and artificial intelligence shares dropped.

The strength in health care came as 3 of the 11 sectors rose across the broader market. On a cap-weighted basis, the Health Care sector finished +1.4%, while the equal-weighted measure was +1.5%. When equal-weighted performance matches or slightly exceeds the market-cap benchmark, it indicates that buying was spread across mid-sized and smaller members rather than driven exclusively by the largest constituents.

Defensive Rotation and Company Updates

Stock-specific news also provided tailwinds across medical devices and therapeutics. Boston Scientific led the sector after previously warning that a cyber incident would likely prevent it from meeting 2026 sales and adjusted-EPS guidance. The company subsequently announced that manufacturing and shipping operations were fully restored.

In drug development, Moderna highlighted that its cancer vaccine win fueled a broad push across tumor types. In diagnostic coverage, EviCore announced that it will expand coverage for Guardant Health's Shield cancer test.

Fund Profile and Multi-Month Trajectory

Monday's advance builds on a broader trend for Health Care Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLV), which is +21.4% over the past twelve months despite staying essentially flat at -0.4% over the past month. The session's broad breadth helped push the fund back toward the upper end of its multi-month trading range, reinforcing the steady demand seen across defensive sectors.

  • AExcellent quality
  • BGood quality
  • CAverage quality
  • DBelow average
  • EWeakest quality

A grade measures quality against the other companies in a sector, from historical data. It is not a prediction, not a price target, and not advice. A company can be graded A and still fall.
