Health Care fell on Thursday, August 27 during a session in which most S&P 500 constituents finished lower. As the Associated Press reported, gains following earnings from major technology companies lifted market indexes, offsetting declines across the majority of individual components while Treasury yields ticked higher. The healthcare group declined alongside the broader constituent weakness.

The Health Care sector fell -1.1% during the session. For investors holding the group through Health Care Select Sector SPDR Fund, an exchange-traded fund that trades under the ticker XLV, the fund dropped -1.1% to close at $171.58.

Selling pressure extended across the vast majority of the industry. Only 18 of 59 advanced on Thursday, highlighting the broad-based nature of the retreat. The sector's cap-weighted decline of -1.1% was noticeably steeper than the -0.6% drop recorded by its equal-weighted counterpart. That divergence shows that the sector's largest constituents by market capitalization absorbed heavier selling than the average member across the index.

Individual bright spots were not enough to reverse the downward momentum. Veeva Systems Inc Class A (+15.2%) surged after Benzinga reported that the company topped quarterly earnings estimates, saw strong customer momentum in its CRM business, and raised its full-year guidance. Revvity Inc. (+2.7%) also ended the day higher. However, those gains were overshadowed by widespread declines across the sector, including a drop in Moderna Inc (-4.6%).

The session's pullback interrupts an otherwise steady climb for healthcare over recent weeks. Even with Thursday's decline, XLV remains up +3.2% over the past month, reflecting resilient performance for the fund over the longer window.

A grade measures quality against the other companies in a sector, from historical data. It is not a prediction, not a price target, and not advice. A company can be graded A and still fall.
