EasyAlpha's numbers show a clear divide between large and small names across the Health Care sector on Friday, September 11. While the cap-weighted sector finished -0.2%, lagging a broader market in which 9 of the 11 sectors rose, underlying breadth was positive. Advancing stocks represented 55.9% of the sector's S&P 500 members, lifting the equal-weighted return to +0.3%. The Health Care Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLV), an exchange-traded fund tracking the sector, closed at $165.37, recording -0.2% for the session as weakness in heavy constituents offset gains across the majority of holdings.
Edwards Lifesciences Corp (-2.8%) paced decliners, though our sources show no reported driver for the move. Offsetting that drag, Moderna Inc (+5.4%) led advancers as buyers reassessed an earlier downgrade and positioned for an upcoming industry conference, followed by Revvity Inc. (+2.9%). In pharmaceuticals, Gilead Sciences won a federal appeals court decision blocking the unauthorized importation and sale of foreign-market HIV treatments in the United States.
EasyAlpha grades each company in the sector against its industry peers. Across XLV, 50.4% of the fund's graded weight sits in companies graded A or B. Companies graded A or B have stronger fundamentals, and historically they have carried a lower risk of large drawdowns than companies graded D or E. With $43.9 billion in net assets and an expense ratio of 0.08%, the fund offers a low-cost vehicle for accessing the group's quality mix.
Friday's session leaves XLV at -1.8% over the past month, but the group's longer-term trajectory remains upward. Over extended horizons, the fund has posted +13.3% over the past one hundred sessions, +10.4% over the past six months, and +18.4% over the past twelve months.

How grades work
Every day we grade each company against the other companies in its sector, looking at its finances, how its stock trades, and what the market is signaling. The result is one simple letter.
- AExcellent quality
- BGood quality
- CAverage quality
- DBelow average
- EWeakest quality
A grade measures quality against the other companies in a sector, from historical data. It is not a prediction, not a price target, and not advice. A company can be graded A and still fall.
