The Health Care sector slipped on Monday, August 31, weighed down by its largest components during a session of broad market selling. The Health Care Select Sector SPDR Fund, an exchange-traded fund trading under ticker XLV, fell -0.4% to close at $170.54. Breadth across the group was weak, with only 40.7% of member stocks advancing during the session. The cap-weighted sector fell -0.4%, outpacing the equal-weighted drop of -0.1% because the largest companies exerted more downward pressure on the market-cap weighted index. The decline unfolded on a day where 2 of the 11 sectors rose. Broader equity markets fell as military strikes against Iranian sites lifted oil prices. In addition, rising Treasury yields renewed interest-rate concerns for investors.

Individual stock performance showed clear divergence across the sector's holdings. Veeva Systems Inc Class A (+3.2%) paced the gainers after increasing its full-year guidance. The company also found support as analysts raised price targets on the stock. It was joined among top performers by Boston Scientific Corp (+3.1%). In contrast, DaVita HealthCare Partners Inc (-2.6%) saw the sector's sharpest decline, adding to the downward pressure on the fund.

Every day EasyAlpha grades each company against its industry peers. Across the sector, 50.9% of the fund's graded assets sit in companies earning an A or B quality grade. Historically, companies graded A or B have stronger fundamentals and carry a lower risk of large drawdowns than companies graded D or E. Over the past month, XLV has gained +4.9%, maintaining steady net gains across the broader period despite the session pullback.
