Our read of the Consumer Discretionary sector on Friday, October 30 shows heavyweight pressure and a thin foundation of quality. The Consumer Discretionary Select Sector SPDR Fund, an exchange-traded fund that tracks the sector under ticker XLY, closed -0.7% as its largest holdings weighed on performance. Across the sector, the cap-weighted return finished at -0.9%, trailing an equal-weighted return of -0.4%, which shows that the group's largest companies drove the decline. Internal breadth was weak, with only 36.2% of sector members advancing. Furthermore, companies graded A or B account for just 21.1% of the fund's graded weight, leaving little high-quality support beneath the surface. That weakness occurred as major US stock indexes dropped across the broader market.

Our sources show no single reported driver behind the pullback across Consumer Discretionary stocks on Friday. Instead, market sentiment weakened across Wall Street as investors questioned the profitability and scale of corporate capital spending. The broader market weakness created a difficult environment for cyclical shares, leaving the sector without strong buying support.

Among individual names, Best Buy Co. Inc closed at -4.7%, marking the steepest drop in the sector. Our sources show no reported driver for the company on Friday. In corporate leadership, Carter's announced an overhaul of its executive team and began a search for a chief operating officer.

A handful of consumer companies managed to resist the broader pullback. MGM Resorts International finished at +3.9%, while General Motors Company closed at +2.0%. In the restaurant space, Chipotle Mexican Grill announced plans to bring back its smoked brisket. Despite these isolated gains, market participation remained muted, and on Friday, 5 of the 11 sectors rose.

While XLY provides low-cost sector access with an expense ratio of 0.08% across $21.3 billion, its closing price of $115.38 reflects a mixed longer-term record. Over the past month, the fund has generated +6.0%, and it sits at +1.7% over the past 100 sessions. However, longer windows reflect steeper challenges: XLY stands at -2.0% across the past six months and sits at -50.6% over the past twelve months.

How grades work

Every day we grade each company against the other companies in its sector, looking at its finances, how its stock trades, and what the market is signaling. The result is one simple letter.

  • AExcellent quality
  • BGood quality
  • CAverage quality
  • DBelow average
  • EWeakest quality
How grades work →

A grade measures quality against the other companies in a sector, from historical data. It is not a prediction, not a price target, and not advice. A company can be graded A and still fall.
