EasyAlpha grades the stocks in the sector against their industry peers, and only 32.7% of the graded weight sits in companies graded A or B, the tiers with stronger fundamentals and historically lower risk of large drawdowns. On Friday, October 30, breadth was fragile as just 33.7% of member stocks advanced. The cap-weighted Industrials sector recorded -1.5%, whereas an equal-weighted basket of its constituents finished at -0.9%, indicating that the largest heavyweights accounted for most of the session's decline. The sector's tracking exchange-traded fund, Industrial Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLI), closed -1.6% at $167.40. The broader market retreated as investors sold high-valuation technology shares over doubts about returns on artificial intelligence spending. Heavyweight Caterpillar fell following its third-quarter financial results.
The session saw sharp dispersion among individual holdings, as specific earnings reports created wide performance gaps. FedEx Freight Holding Company, Inc. led member performance at +14.9% after publishing its initial standalone quarterly filing, which showed 9.2% revenue growth. In water and environmental diagnostics, Veralto Corporation followed at +6.8% after third-quarter results showed margin expansion and full-year adjusted earnings guidance of $4.49 to $4.52 per share.
Those gains failed to offset heavier declines across capital goods and clean energy equipment. At the bottom of the group, Bloom Energy Corp closed at -8.6%, pressured by analyst price-target cuts and post-earnings cash-flow questions that compounded selling across high-multiple, clean-energy infrastructure names.
Industrial performance mirrored a defensive tone across Wall Street, where 5 of the 11 sectors rose. Over intermediate stretches, XLI stands at -0.7% over the past month, -2.1% over the past six months, and +8.2% over the past twelve months. With $29.8 billion in net assets and an expense ratio of 0.08%, the fund provides low-cost exposure to the group, though the day highlighted how quickly a handful of capital-intensive giants can dictate its direction.

How grades work
Every day we grade each company against the other companies in its sector, looking at its finances, how its stock trades, and what the market is signaling. The result is one simple letter.
- AExcellent quality
- BGood quality
- CAverage quality
- DBelow average
- EWeakest quality
A grade measures quality against the other companies in a sector, from historical data. It is not a prediction, not a price target, and not advice. A company can be graded A and still fall.
