On Tuesday, October 20, the Health Care Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLV), an exchange-traded fund tracking the healthcare sector, closed +2.4%. Inside the sector, 91.7% of member companies advanced, while 52.8% of the fund's graded holdings carry an A or B quality grade. The sector finished +2.4% on a cap-weighted basis, while an equal-weighted measure finished +1.7%, indicating that the sector's largest heavyweights drove the bulk of the move. That strength unfolded as easing crude oil prices and solid corporate earnings helped support broader equity sentiment.

Moderna Inc topped the board, ending the session +6.7%. The biotechnology developer saw buying interest ahead of late-stage trial data for its investigational individualized melanoma vaccine developed alongside Merck, scheduled for presentation at an upcoming medical conference. The sector's second-ranking gainer, Charles River Laboratories, settled +5.1%. Meanwhile, Bristol Myers Squibb moved higher as the drugmaker prepared to showcase late-stage oncology data at an upcoming medical congress. In obesity treatments, trial analysis highlighted notable weight loss outcomes for next-generation therapies. In medical devices, DexCom attracted interest after clinical findings showed notable glycemic improvements in non-insulin Type 2 diabetes patients using its G7 continuous glucose monitor.

Not every name participated in the rally. DaVita HealthCare Partners Inc ranked as the sector's steepest decliner, finishing -6.4%. While the dialysis provider scheduled its quarterly earnings call for late October, our sources show no reported driver or fresh corporate filing explaining the drop. Elsewhere, Merck adjusted its European portfolio by withdrawing its bacterial infection therapy Zinplava for commercial reasons, following an earlier exit from the United States market.

Tuesday's session pushed XLV to a close of $179.83, reinforcing a sustained upward trend rather than a single-day aberration. With the fund posting +6.4% over the past month and +24.2% over the past twelve months, healthcare's defensive profile has consistently drawn capital as investors prioritize earnings visibility. Across the broader market, 9 of the 11 sectors rose, with healthcare serving as one of the primary anchors of the session's advance.

How grades work

Every day we grade each company against the other companies in its sector, looking at its finances, how its stock trades, and what the market is signaling. The result is one simple letter.

  • AExcellent quality
  • BGood quality
  • CAverage quality
  • DBelow average
  • EWeakest quality
How grades work →

A grade measures quality against the other companies in a sector, from historical data. It is not a prediction, not a price target, and not advice. A company can be graded A and still fall.
