On Friday, October 2, the exchange-traded fund Communication Services Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLC) tracked a sector where cap-weighted performance reached +1.0%, while the equal-weighted measure finished +0.4%. That spread demonstrates that the sector's largest companies drove the gain, even as overall breadth remained evenly divided with 50.0% of its member stocks advancing. Across the fund, only 22.1% of graded holdings sits in companies graded A or B. The sector joined a broad market rally in which 11 of the 11 sectors rose, following a monthly employment report showing payrolls grew by 29,000 alongside a 4.2% unemployment rate. The softer labor data helped ease concerns over borrowing costs, lifting equities across major market indexes.

Individual stock drivers included notable balance sheet developments alongside the macroeconomic lift. EchoStar Corporation ranked as the top gainer in the group, ending +6.8% after filing a Form 8-K that confirmed its DISH DBS subsidiary emerged from Chapter 11 restructuring and completed approximately $4.35 billion in aggregate debt reduction. Paramount Skydance Corporation Class B Common Stock also advanced, closing +1.7%. In contrast, Charter Communications Inc trailed the group, ending -1.9%.

For investors assessing the sector through XLC, the fund finished the session +0.3% at $110.29. The fund provides low-cost access to the sector at an expense ratio of 0.08% across $22.4 billion in assets, though EasyAlpha's evaluation of the graded 87.0% of the portfolio underscores how concentrated the quality profile remains. Because cap-weighted vehicles allocate heavily to mega-cap market valuations, the performance of top constituents often masks weaker breadth across the median constituent. The day's modest gain provides brief respite from a longer stretch of softness, with the fund marking -1.9% over the past month, -4.8% over the past 100 sessions, and -5.3% over the past twelve months.

  • AExcellent quality
  • BGood quality
  • CAverage quality
  • DBelow average
  • EWeakest quality
How grades work →

A grade measures quality against the other companies in a sector, from historical data. It is not a prediction, not a price target, and not advice. A company can be graded A and still fall.
