Heavyweights Pull Industrials Lower Despite Broad Stock Gains
Most industrial stocks gained on Thursday, but a steep retreat in power-infrastructure suppliers pulled the cap-weighted sector and its primary fund into the red.

On Thursday, October 22, broad strength across the Industrials sector was overshadowed by a sharp drop among its largest companies. While 63.2% of sector members rose, leaving the equal-weighted sector at +0.3%, the cap-weighted sector closed -0.8%. The Industrial Select Sector SPDR Fund, an exchange-traded fund that tracks the sector under ticker XLI, closed -1.0% at $166.71. Across the fund, only 22.5% of the graded weight sits in companies graded A or B. The primary drag came from GE Vernova LLC, which closed -10.6% as concerns mounted over how hyperscalers will finance expanded artificial intelligence spending.
The pressure on power-equipment suppliers built after Meta outlined plans to aggressively invest in artificial intelligence and issue nonvoting shares. That spending outlook prompted a sector-wide pullback from electrical infrastructure and power-equipment names.
Outside of power equipment, company earnings showed solid end-market demand. Security provider Allegion PLC closed +11.0% after raising its full-year earnings guidance and reporting higher quarterly margins. Defense supplier Lockheed Martin Corporation ended +7.0% as it lifted its annual sales outlook for the second straight quarter. Expanding commercial demand also prompted new investment, with Carrier Global announcing a planned $600 million center in Texas to build chillers for data centers and industrial facilities.
Despite those gains, the pull from mega-cap decliners left the sector lagging the broader market on a day when 5 of the 11 sectors rose. The fund has faced headwinds in recent months, standing -4.3% over the past 100 sessions, compared to +9.1% over the past twelve months. Because XLI weights constituents by market capitalization rather than giving equal weight to each member, a sharp drop in one heavyweight can easily overwhelm broad strength among smaller constituents.

How grades work
Every day we grade each company against the other companies in its sector, looking at its finances, how its stock trades, and what the market is signaling. The result is one simple letter.
- AExcellent quality
- BGood quality
- CAverage quality
- DBelow average
- EWeakest quality
A grade measures quality against the other companies in a sector, from historical data. It is not a prediction, not a price target, and not advice. A company can be graded A and still fall.
